Obituary for Judith Louese "Judy" Melcher (Slater )

Judith “Judy” Louese Slater Melcher, 73, of Port Lavaca, joined her family and friends in Heaven on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Judy was born November 8, 1944 in Lake Jackson to B.F. and Dorothy Coleman Slater. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1967. Judy took one of the first computer science courses offered by Sam Houston, and upon graduation worked as a computer programmer for Texeco, Inc., in Houston. Judy married J. C. Melcher, III on September 7, 1967. She and J.C. returned to Port Lavaca in 1969 to work in the Melcher family hardware store where Judy was the bookkeeper.

Judy was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca, a member and officer in the Port Lavaca Garden Club, a member of the Junior League, and she enjoyed playing bridge in two of the local clubs. As a parent, she volunteered in the activities of her children, holding officer positions in the Parent Teacher Association and Calhoun High School Band Boosters, and leading both a Cub Scout den and a Girl Scout troop. Judy loved to garden and typically gave gorgeous, blooming Amaryllis flowers to friends and family at Christmastime.

Judy is survived by her husband, J.C.; her children, Jill Melcher Putnam of Grapevine and J. C. Melcher, IV (Martha), of Houston; grandson, Aric Putnam of Grapevine; her brothers, James Hiner of Houston and Biff Slater (Lynn) of Brazoria; and a large loving extended family. Judy is preceded in death by her parents; step-father, James Hiner; and sister, Harriet “Jan” Slater Murrey.

A service celebrating Judy’s life and her faith will be held, Tuesday, October 16th at 10:00AM at First United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca, 814 N. San Antonio St, followed by burial at Green Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the First United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca.
