Obituary

Dorthy (aka Dorothy) Jean Meyer was born July 13, 1933 at home in Cat Spring, Texas, daughter of Alvin and Ethel (Kveton) Goebel. She grew up and attended Millheim and Bellville Schools, graduating from Bellville High School in May of 1950. She then attended and graduated Texas Lutheran College of Seguin, Texas in 1954, and pursued graduate classes at Trinity University in San Antonio in 1956 and 1957.

Dorthy’s career as a teacher began in the Orange Public School system in January 1954 where she taught Spanish and English class for 1-1/2 years. She then moved to San Antonio and taught English at Hot Wells Junior and Poe Junior Schools. In 1969, she took a teaching and Department Head position in English/Language Arts at Kirby Junior High School. Retiring in 1977.

Dorthy married Arno Meyer on November 12, 1954 in Seguin, Texas. They made their home in San Antonio and Kirby, Texas. On retirement they built and moved their home to the Millheim Community and enjoyed the area for 25 years. This community was home to them and they enjoyed family and friends in several activities. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage prior to Arno’s death in 2011. She left the area in 2016, moving to Temple, Texas for health and assistance support. In May of this year, Dorthy moved into an assisted living facility in Victoria, Texas where she enjoyed several activities and developed new friendships with the other residents and staff.

A member of Bellville United Methodist Church, Dorthy was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #6522, participated in the Millheim Hall Association, and worked with the community on many events. Dorthy was the family historian, and she documented extensive research into family genealogy and history. She enjoyed submitting arts and crafts, jellies, wine, and knitted projects at the Austin County Fair, and procured a bouquet of ribbons and awards that she proudly exhibited.

Dorthy treasured her family and friends, and was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed children and loved to watch them grow, learn, and play. She enjoyed the country home setting and spent time simply watching the cattle graze, deer at the feeders, and the swarm of hummingbirds that routinely attacked her feeders.

Dorthy passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 85 years of age.
