Obituary

Helen Lavon Godwin Upton, 89, lovingly known to most as "Sister Upton" or "Nanny", was met at Heaven's gates, Friday, October 2nd, 2020.  She is no longer suffering and she is praising the Lord, along side her beloved, Bishop Leo Paul Upton.

Helen was born, March 22nd, 1931 in Center, Texas to the late William Armor and Bertha Olivia DeFee Godwin. She was raised in the Houston area; after her schooling, she worked for several oil companies in Houston. Helen met the love of her life, Leo Paul Upton, in Houston and they were married, October 17, 1952. Paul was an evangelist and together they spent the next 60 years, serving the Lord with their faithful work in The Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ and the United Pentecostal Church. Over the years they pastored churches in Sioux Falls South Dakota, Huntington Texas, Portage Indiana, Arlington Texas, Houston Texas, and finally settled in September of 1972 in Sulphur, Louisiana at The Lighthouse Tabernacle. Their church family at Lighthouse Tabernacle was deeply blessed by their leadership and prayer. Helen was a devoted prayer warrior that many called upon over the years, knowing she would go to God in constant prayer. Helen was passionate about her family, loved them deeply, taking care of them with loving devotion. Helen was known as well for her quick wit and ornery but sweet tricks. She always enjoyed a good day of shopping with "her girls". Helen was an avid reader, she could settle in with a good book to the end and always enjoyed studying history, especially WWII. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bertha Godwin, her siblings Weldon "Bo" Godwin, Casille Elizabeth Godwin, and Laverne Godwin; her sister-in-law, Ernestine Godwin; and her husband of 60 years, Bishop L. P. Upton.

Helen leaves to cherish her legacy of a faith filled life and loving the Lord to her children, Rev. Paul Allan Upton and his wife, Stella; Renee Upton Price and her husband, William “Bill”; brother, James “Sonny” Godwin; grandchildren, Jessica Ruth Upton Balderas and her husband, Jose; Eric James Upton and his wife, Leah, Adam Michael Price and Liana Shari Upton and her fiancé, K. D. Monceaux; great grandchildren, Jenna Lael Balderas, Joel Ericsson Upton, Oliver James Upton, Lila Noelle Upton, and Everett Jude Upton; along with numerous other loving family members and church family.

Due to the current COVID pandemic and her beloved Sulphur area dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Laura, services and burial will be held privately. A memorial service honoring Sister Upton will be planned for a later date at Lighthouse Tabernacle.
