My most enduring memory of John McCown somewhat surprisingly has nothing to do with our work together for many years as mental health professionals. Instead, lodged in my still-functional long term memory is a moment we shared in one of his many workshops he had over the years. John’s skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and so many other similar areas always astounded me, and others (all his wives!) admired and benefited from those skills as well. He had just installed a wall air conditioner in a space (there was no window) he had to create to do so. The installation looked perfect to me, and I recall John himself was proud of a job well done. I asked him how he learned to do that. His reply will surprise no one who knew him. “Terry, I just smashed a huge f..king hole in the wall, so I had to figure out how I was going to fill that hole with this f..king air conditioner. When you have to install an air conditioner in a wall with no window, this is how I do it”. I must confess I was never brave enough to knock a big hole in anything I had to figure out how to repair, but I admired my friend for a method that worked for him time and again. Wherever John is, and we can’t be sure where that is, now can we, I suspect he may at this moment be sizing up just how much of a hole he needs to smash up so he can fix it. RIP, my old friend.
