Phyllis Jean Gehring Franke passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 3, 2019. She was 79 years old. Born on April 26,1940 in Louisville, Kentucky, Phyllis was the oldest of Ed and Luella Gehring’s three children. The family moved to Victoria, Texas, where Phyllis graduated from high school. Her passion for learning and her love of children inspired her to pursue a career in teaching. She graduated with her Bachelors Degree in Education from Victoria College and later earned a Master’s Degree from East Texas State University.

While completing her undergraduate studies, Phyllis met and married the love of her life, Darrell Franke of Goliad, Texas. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on July 23, 2019. Three children, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren arrived as a result of their union. Phyllis and Darrell made their home in Goliad for the majority of their marriage
Phyllis was an elementary school teacher for 35 years in the Goliad school district. She was one of the first teachers in the Head Start Pre K program and was beloved by generations of her students. Phyllis loved teaching children and went above and beyond in the classroom in order to meet their needs. At Christmas time, she made care packages of personal items and toys for her students.

Phyllis’ compassion and good works were also expressed through her participation in a variety of Christian charities. She was an Evangelical Lutheran and woman of profound faith. Phyllis was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Goliad. All of her children and grandchildren were baptized in the church. For many years, Phyllis raised her voice in glorious song as a member of the choir there.

Phyllis’ other hobbies included fervent fandom for the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. She never missed a game and was not to be disturbed when watching her favorite teams. Phyllis loved books and was a voracious and avid lifelong reader. Phyllis had a sign in her kitchen that stated “the queen does not cook”and loved nothing more than going out with family and friends for a restaurant meal of fried seafood. Phyllis had many friends and will be remembered for her sparkling personality and bawdy sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew her and the many lives she touched.

Phyllis joins her parents and her twin brothers Teddy and Eddie Gehring in the heavenly kingdom.

Survivors include husband Darrell of Goliad, daughter Dawn Schendel of Comfort, (Trip Harger of Comfort and Elizabeth Turner of Deming) son Derrick and wife Annie of Austin, (Maximilien, Rex, Annabelle and Evangeline Franke of Austin, Dylan Franke of Minneapolis) and son Douglas and wife Shannon of Goliad, (Justin and Dustin Franke and Kelsey Bundy & Daisy Bundy and Kali Bundy & Alexander Jayy Thomas of Goliad) as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank George and his wife Juanita Padilla and their children for all the assistance and support they provided to both Phyllis and Darrell.

Viewing will take place at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Goliad on Saturday, August 10, 2019 beginning at 12noon - 3:00 pm and the memorial service immediately following at 3:30 pm at the church. There will be a reception following the service in the parish hall. Anyone wishing to contribute food or beverage items can drop off at the parish hall during viewing hours. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Phyllis’ name be made to St. John’s Lutheran church or the Goliad Public Library.
