Three children, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren arrived as a result of their union. Phyllis and Darrell made their home in Goliad for the majority of their marriage
Phyllis was an elementary school teacher for 35 years in the Goliad school district. She was one of the first teachers in the Head Start Pre K program and was beloved by generations of her students. Phyllis loved teaching children and went above and beyond in the classroom in order to meet their needs. At Christmas time, she made care packages of personal items and toys for her students.
Phyllis’ compassion and good works were also expressed through her participation in a variety of Christian charities. She was an Evangelical Lutheran and woman of profound faith. Phyllis was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Goliad. All of her children and grandchildren were baptized in the church. For many years, Phyllis raised her voice in glorious song as a member of the choir there.
Phyllis’ other hobbies included fervent fandom for the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. She never missed a game and was not to be disturbed when watching her favorite teams. Phyllis loved books and was a voracious and avid lifelong reader. Phyllis had a sign in her kitchen that stated “the queen does not cook”and loved nothing more than going out with family and friends for a restaurant meal of fried seafood. Phyllis had many friends and will be remembered for her sparkling personality and bawdy sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew her and the many lives she touched.
Phyllis joins her parents and her twin brothers Teddy and Eddie Gehring in the heavenly kingdom.
