Robert Allen Herron was born on January 1, 1933 in Placedo, Texas. He was the seventh child born of ten children through the union of the late Robert (“Daddy Bob”) and Evelyn Williams (“Mama Eve”) Herron. The family attended Williams Chapel Methodist Church in Placedo. He was baptized on the family land in Placedo Creek. He attended school in Placedo and went onto high school at F.W. Gross High School. While at Gross High school he excelled at track and football until his graduation in 1953.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army soon after graduation and began his military career on June 24, 1953. He was on active duty during the Korean War, and remained in the Army Reserves for an additional 37 years. Prior to his retirement he ascended to a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer rank of Sergeant First Class. After ending his military service, he worked for Texas Lumber for an additional 23 years and re-retired as the yard foreman.
Robert Allen had many favorite activities. He loved playing dominoes and cards. When he played, you knew he was there. He was the life of the party and always seemed to make all feel welcome. He spent hours on the property taking care of the cattle and maintaining the land. He would always have on his signature hat or cap. A cigar was never far from him. Cabbage, meatloaf, peach cobbler, mashed potatoes were his meals to eat. “BBQing” was his passion.
He was united in marriage to Hannah Gaskin Herron for 19 years until her death. He later married Clydene White for 30 years until her death. During this time he was key to the upbringing of his stepdaughter, Renata Barfield.
He was blessed with many children: a daughter Doris Hughes (Rance) and sons Ronald Barefield (Mary Herron) of Victoria, TX; Wayne Barefield, M.D (Laura) of Birmingham, AL; Robert Boykin (Stacy) of Clearwater, FL.
On July 10, 2019, Robert Allen entered into eternal peace with the Lord. He was preceded in death by sisters: Velma Zora Miller, Vera Lee Herron, Myrtle Lee Herron, Beulah Mae Cook, Dorothy Beatrice Brown; brother Vance James Herron and grandson, Anthony Miller.
He is survived by his children, 10 grandchildren: Corey Tucker-Barefield and William Miller of Victoria, TX; Ashley Borden and Andre Hosey of Clearwater, FL; Alyssa, Jordan and Maya Barefield of Birmingham, AL; Kamree and Davin Barfield of Austin, TX; four great grandchildren; siblings: James Jay Herron, Floyd Henry Herron, Evelyn Gertrude Calloway of Victoria Texas, a host of family, friends and many others who will remember him fondly.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm with a funeral service at 12:00 pm at St. Peters Baptist Church, 2708 S. Laurent Street, Victoria, TX. Interment will be at 9:15 am on Friday, July 19, 2019 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX.
